History of Craigleith Quarry
Craigleith Retail Park was originally built in 1993 by Miller Developments and Stannifer as a joint venture.
Henderson acquired the park in 2002, and has extended it by building on Miller Developments' former HQ and forming five new retail units totalling over 45,000 sq ft, as well as refurbishing the existing units, taking the total shop floorspace at The Quarry to over 175,000 sq ft.
Prior to being a retail park, the area was originally Craigleith Quarry, Edinburgh's largest and best-known. It had a world-wide reputation for producing building stone of the highest quality, providing the majority of material for Edinburgh's New Town and exported stone to London, Europe and United States.
The quarry was active for over 300 years and had a hole of 110 metres high. After quarrying ceased it was filled with inert waste for sixty years prior to becoming a retail park.
Henderson wanted the park's name to refer back to its history and hence it became 'The Quarry' at Craigleith Retail Park.
